TRIO/UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM @ BHS
UPWARD BOUND
The Upward Bound program is a fully, federally funded grant program through the US Department of Education. Upward Bound is designed to build and strengthen the motivation and skills students need to succeed in college. Qualifications for participation in the program include having academic potential, meeting income criteria, and/or coming from a family in which neither parent has earned a Bachelor's degree. Benefits of participating in the Upward Bound Program include increased educational expectations for students as well as increased likelihood of entering and completing a post-secondary program of study.
The Academic Year Program
While enrolled in high school UB provides students with tutoring, academic advising, and workshops based on achieving academic success. Other activities during the academic year program may include student success workshops, cultural experiences such as plays, concerts and art exhibits, and field trips. Students are also offered a variety of pre-college assistance such as assistance with applications, scholarship searches, campus visits and ACT preparation.
The Summer Component
During an intensive six week session, students are involved in a summer curriculum of core classes, personal & life development skills, social activities, and career research. In addition, students participate in cultural events, community service and leadership.
Beatrice High School is partnering with Southeast Community College as well as two other southeast Nebraska high schools to serve 56 eligible students. Participating high schools are Southern and Fairbury. All services are funded through a five-year, Department of Education-TRIO-Upward Bound grant.
The Upward Bound office is located on the SCC - Beatrice Campus
